Mike leads internal operations, systems, and processes, drawing on experience managing and scaling impact investment platforms Ethex and Energise Africa. His expertise in the UK social investment landscape includes working with community-led organisations to raise substantial funding for projects in renewable energy, housing, and international development. Driven by a belief in responsible finance and an interest in innovative technology, he has recently focused on tech-for-good solutions for conservation charities. At Common, he applies his investment skills to the challenge of making nature recovery investable at scale. He lives in rural Hampshire with his young family and when not in the office, can be found in the great outdoors.
A passionate belief in the environmental, economic and social benefits well managed woodlands bring to communities has shaped Mark’s personal and professional life. Since graduating from Bangor University with a BSc in Conservation and Forest Ecosystems, he has worked a wide range of forestry and land use roles both in the public and private sector. From managing national pest and disease outbreaks and their impact on trade in government, to supervising large woodland creation projects as a forest manager.As Head of Projects at Common, Mark works directly with communities to deliver projects on the ground. His aim is to improve communication and collaboration between different land use sectors to more effectively to respond to the climate crisis through community ownership.
As Ecosystem Manager, Harriet leads on the design and delivery of Common’s partnership, finance and community ecosystem. The thread of Harriet’s work is supporting community-led initiatives and organisations tackling systemic issues and the root causes of today’s crises. Her work weaves together strategy, communications, partnerships and project management. With a previous focus on corporate sustainability, at EY and later Volans, she now focuses on community-led change and building bridges between sectors. Harriet runs a community forest garden and learning space, and supports projects spanning climate action, community resilience, nature connection and cultural repair. When not doing this, she’s often wandering in the woods, enjoying the company of the oaks and other forest beings.
Tom leads community empowerment and partnership building at Common, bringing over 15 years of experience in environmental and land-based initiatives. His work has spanned rural and urban settings, supporting communities to access land, co-design governance models, and develop resilient business plans. With a background in stakeholder engagement and programme delivery, he’s passionate about projects that reconnect people with nature. Before joining Common, Tom held leadership roles at organisations including Shared Assets, Ethex, Plunkett, Sustain and Groundwork, where he worked on community investment, land access strategies, and green finance. He has a strong track record of building cross-sector collaborations that deliver social, environmental, and economic impact.
Christoph builds his work at Common on a career helping communities to advance their wellbeing, skills, and pathways. After 11 years in the film industry, he founded Open Cinema, and later Airbase and B Foundry, and is an advisor to Moving Beyond. Christoph has presented on social innovation at international conferences and universities, is a TEDx speaker, and a mentor at the Imperial College cleantech accelerator. He is a trustee of his children’s school, and is a volunteer river guardian for the Western Sussex Rivers Trust. His service is gathering communities, organisations, and nature, and empowering participants to use their unique capabilities to restore our natural world.

Her passion lies in safeguarding and enhancing our natural environment, recognising the potential for a multiplying effect with nature connectivity on a national scale. While climate change poses a huge global challenge, Tessa firmly believes in making small improvements to our individual corners of the planet. Jonny is responsible for Esmée Fairbairn Foundation’s impact investing. Before joining Esmée, Jonny managed impact funds as Investment Director at Big Issue Invest Fund Management and is a Chartered Accountant from Deloitte. Jonny holds several advisory roles, including the Impact Investment Advisory Group at the BVCA, co-chairing the Social Impact Investors Group, a Visiting Fellow at Zinc VC, and the Social Enterprise Investment Committee at Trust for London.

Holly is Sustainable Investment Lead and Climate Specialist at Schroders Capital, the private assets division of Schroders. Here she enables and oversees the development, integration and delivery of strategies aligned to climate change and natural capital. Holly has a history working within climate change research for Schroders and has a Masters in climate change, management and finance at Imperial College London. Holly has recently completed the ‘Nature-based Solutions to Global Challenges Foundation Course’ through the Nature Based Solutions initiative in partnership with the University of Oxford.

Bill used to be a medical virologist but now spends his time working on larger things like trees. His family foundation supports ecological restoration projects across the UK, but mainly in Scotland. He is Chair of the Highlands and Islands Environment Foundation and the Neighbourhood Nature Revival Fund which helps communities to get going in their ecological efforts.

Colin is a serial social entrepreneur with a track record of establishing impactful and sustainable social enterprises. In 2012, he founded Tree Shepherd, which has supported hundreds of people from low-income backgrounds to start their own businesses. Before that, he founded and operated 5 innovative recycling businesses. One of these, Green-Works, was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development. In 2012, he wrote ‘How to Make a Million Jobs, a charter for social enterprise’. Colin received an MBE in 2019 for “services to disadvantaged people and the environment”. Currently, he helps multiple enterprises to grow and increase their impact. In February 2025, he launched “Prosper with Purpose”, a book designed to help entrepreneurs of all stripes run better businesses.

Formerly head of climate change at the National Lottery Community Fund, Nick is Executive Director of the Environmental Funders Network, convening the UK’s leading individual and institutional impact investors and philanthropists for climate and nature recovery. Nick is also a board member for Outdoor People and Woking Environment Action (WEAct). Before joining the Lottery he led ActionFunderwhich brings businesses and other funders together with communities to bring about impactful change at a local level. Nick co-founded Outdoor Classroom Day, and Backyard Nature – two campaigns which aim to improve young people’s connection with nature and the outdoors. Prior to this he worked for eight years as an economist advising government departments and regional authorities on environmental issues, climate technology and policy.

A Fellow of the Society of Leadership Fellows, she serves as National Advisor on Mental Health and the Mindfulness Initiative. As a visionary strategist, Jenny builds diverse alliances to address social challenges, driving impactful change. She excels in promoting values-led, evidence-based solutions and advocates for approaches rooted in community strengths. Jenny’s skills span strategic vision, communication, network building, and policy transformation, making her a confident, persuasive leader who engages effectively across all levels of society, from government ministers to marginalised communities.

Jessica is the Deputy Director for the Institute for Health Equity. She has shaped the strategic direction of the Institute and overseen its work and development. She has worked closely with international organisations, national and local governments, businesses and the economic sector, third sector organisations and public health and health care systems. She has published widely on the social determinants of health and led much of the Institute’s work and leads the IHE’s work with global organisations including the UN.
Bridie Ashrowan
Bridie joined Social Enterprise Academy in 2025, and leads the Adult Learning team, working across the UK and internationally, supporting them in developing and maintaining strong partnerships, ensuring high quality delivery and impact, and innovating our approach to leadership and transformational learning. She has over thirty years’ experience in the community sector, having worked with a variety of different organisations including start-ups, social enterprise and also in business, and her expertise ranges from the environment to arts and community, and capital and land projects, through to organisational development.
Bridie has held positions on boards, such as Community Land Scotland, Poverty Alliance Scotland and Southern Upland Partnership. She was the founder of Open Road, in Essex, an innovative drug & alcohol charity, and a founding Trustee of Alchemy Film Festival. Outside of the Academy she enjoys writing poetry, reading and film, travel near and far, growing good food and promoting wild-life habitats, and nature recovery.

Dr. Cécile Girardin, co-Founding Director, Nature-based Insights; Technical Director, Nature based Solutions Initiative. Cécile combines years of experience in climate change policy analysis with a background in tropical ecology, a thorough understanding of ecosystem functioning, and of the emerging biodiversity ESG landscape, to provide a unique multidisciplinary approach to her work. Cécile trained as an Ecosystems Scientist at the University of Oxford and Imperial College, and has over 20 years of field experience: working in tropical forests, managing international teams, leading scientific publications, training students, and facilitating discussions on translating science into policy and action. Her research focuses on the potential for nature-based solutions to respond to climate change and to increase the resilience of production landscapes. Cécile advises businesses, financial institutions, NGOs, and industry standards on nature-based solutions.
Sebastian Austin
Woodland Trust
Seb is the South-East Forest Estate Manager for the Woodland Trust. With experience in rural, urban, and peri-urban forestry, he has developed a broad understanding of the challenges facing our forests today, as well as their diverse uses and benefits. His previous work includes leading the creation of community-led woodlands and orchards as Urban Forest Manager for the UK charity Trees for Cities, and project managing flagship forest creation projects for Forestry England. Having gained experience managing forests across the UK and Australia, he is now based in his home county of East Sussex, where he manages more than 5,000 hectares of mixed conifer and ancient broadleaf forests. His passion for forests extends beyond the trees themselves; he is currently undertaking an MSc in Ecology to strengthen his approach to managing forests for their lasting health and resilience.

Sir Tim Smit KBE is the Co-founder and Executive Vice-Chair of the Eden Project in Cornwall, which opened in 2000. Since then, over 19 million people have visited the award-winning site, which transformed a barren clay pit into a thriving hub of world-class horticulture and architecture. The Eden Project has contributed over £1.9 billion to the Cornish economy. Tim is also Executive Chairman of Eden Project International, aiming to establish Eden Projects on every inhabited continent by 2025. He has been honoured with an Honorary CBE in 2002, a KBE in 2012, and multiple Honorary Doctorates.

Russell Horsey is a Chartered Urban Forester and Director of Goetre Villa Ltd, specialising in urban forest management and planning. With over eight years of experience, he leads community engagement, tree planting, and smart technology integration through platforms like TreePlotter. Russell has delivered green infrastructure for projects such as Bristol’s Cycle City and Greater Bristol Bus Network, setting a standard for incorporating green spaces into large urban projects. A keynote speaker and trustee at the Institute of Chartered Foresters, he also advises the Welsh Government on tree and plant health, helping shape urban forestry policies across Wales.

He is currently working with PlantOne Cornwall as well as leading a major project with Ashdown Forest for the centenary of Winnie-the-Pooh, working closely with commercial, ecological, and artistic organisations to enhance public engagement and secure long-term funding.\n\nPrior to this, he has 17 years of experience in leadership, sales and partnerships roles within large and fast-growing technology companies, such as IBM, Oracle and Qualtrics. During this time he specialised in managing strategic relationships, solution development and negotiating complex commercial agreements.
